Cross-pollination

Something special happens when two different things come together.

Tenderstem broccoli, for example, is the far superior hybrid of broccoli and Chinese kale.

Under Pressure is just an awesome song by David Bowie and Queen, though I’ll acknowledge that both artists are exceptional in their own rights.

It’s the spirit of diversity and collaboration that Matthew Syed talks about in Rebel Ideas, when people from different careers and backgrounds mix, the melting pot becomes richer.

This is what we’re trying to achieve a Smiles in Tandem.

I've spent 12 years trying to help my patients to the best of my ability as a dentist. This has largely revolved around what goes on inside people's mouths but I've always cared more about the person the mouth was attached to than the specifics of the teeth. We're in a unique position as dentists where we see a lot of people regularly who perhaps wouldn't otherwise get to see a healthcare professional. We have a lot of longstanding relationships and we regularly show our patients that we listen to them and care about them. For these reasons, we can find ourselves as the sole person that someone confides in in difficult times.

Enter Marisa. Marisa is my wife, my business partner and a psychotherapist. Part of what we're trying to achieve at Smiles is a more integrated healthcare, where dental health and mental health go hand in hand. Marisa works with clients for a broad range of things such as loss, bereavement, stress, depression, phobias (including dental), anxiety and PTSD.

The big advantage we have in the world now, is that distance is no longer an issue. Patients can get the counselling support they need without having to leave the comfort of their own home using online consultations.

Marisa accepts referrals from other therapists, dentists, GPs and self referrals for counselling.

The opportunity to collaborate with my wife is something I've been really excited about and it's one I wanted to share so we can all provide the best possible care for our patients, not just their teeth.

Love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves
